GLADYS KNIGHT &THE PIPS

I thank my sister for introducing me to GLADYS KNIGHT and her music even though i didn’t know it at the time, she would always play her music around the house when I was a lot younger and although I heard it, like most kids that musical light bulb didn’t go on until  sometime later. Songs like

HELP ME MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT,

MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA;

YOU’RE THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME and

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE.

Still it wasn’t until one night it 1983 as I lay in bed with radio turned down, I heard this song playing the voice was familiar yet the sound was so good, reaching over I turned up the volume slightly to listen, It was GLADYS KNIGHT alright and she was hitting the song out of the park. The song was

SAVE THE OVERTIME

 and right there and then I wrote down the title of the track and following day set out to buy it; back then the 12inch single was all the rage. Realising that I had been listening to this artist a lot longer than I had, I set out to buy the then new album VISONS it was riding high in the states. Yet here there was limited success, still I had to have it and to this day remains for me one of my favourite albums that I still like to play with songs like

YOUR NUMBER ONE,

WIND BENEATH MY WINGS and WHEN YOUR FAR AWAY the album also featured writing and production talents of JIMMY JAM and TERRY LEWIS as well as others.

GLADYS MARIE KNIGHT “THE EMPRESS OF SOUL” was born  1952 after a release of a there first single in 1961 “EVERY BEAT OF MY HEART” (vee jay record) she would take a break to raise her children, but 1966 she would sign with MOTOWN RECORDS although not regarded has one of their top acts this didn’t stop them from churning out some big hits, one of them was

    I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE.

As the story goes in the early years they toured with DIANA ROSS and THE SUPREMES ,but due to their dynamic on stage act of which GLADYS speaks of in her memoirs they were kicked off the tour, for making Miss Ross  and co look bad. They would later leave Motown and sign for BUDDHA RECORDS in 1973; this would prove to be a very fruitful period for GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS although one gets the feeling looking back they probably loved a lot more here and in Europe. Near the end of the 70,s she would record a solo project owing to legal differences. Yet none of this would keep the group down and in the early 80,s they where and signed this time to COLUMBIA RECORDS and they continued until 1987 when they recorded there last set. Whilst still with the pips she recorded

 THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR alongside STEVIE WONDER, ELTON JOHN and DIONNE WARWICK. She would continue to release very successful material, throughout the early 90,s and into the millennium. GLADYS KNIGHT has indeed been and still is an ambassador of soul music and music in general. If for some strange reason anyone should doubt this then take a look at her records it speak for itself. New artist should break open some those great songs and take a good listen there is a lot of soul in that women’s voice. So to GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS we say a big thank you. Interestingly she the aunt to the late Aaliyah also she sang the James Bond theme

LICSENSE TO KILL. She has also won Seven Grammy awards. She has endured many many things down through the yers and unlike some, has managed to take somthing positive rather than the negative from all of it, and give back ,trully a lesson to us all.
