Angela Evelyn Bassett (born August 16, 1958) is an actress of extreme talent that has helped her endure and be remembered for her raw talent on the screen, my first recollection of her was in the movie by john singleton BOYZ N THE HOOD in 1991she has appeared in numerous films and television roles noted mainly for her portrayal of TINA TURNER in the hit movie WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT. Other notable films she has appeared in include MALCOM X, WAITING TO EXHALE, and HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK amongst many others, and more recently in movies such as MEET THE BROWN, GREEN LANTERN and JUMPING THE BROOM. In all ANGELA BASSETT shines through her charisma and talent seems to beam, she holds a presence on the screen that quite simply I find captivating and refreshing even when she appears to be playing as small role. I guess this is a true nature of acting if the role is large or small. Whenever I see her name attached to a film role I immediately stand to attention. She was offered the role of LETICIA MUSGROVE in MONSTER BALL (2001) but she turned it down as she did not want to perform nude.Of it she is quoted as saying
''I wasn't going to be a prostitute on film,'' she says. (Not literally a prostitute -- the character is a waitress who has an affair with her convict husband's executioner.) ''I couldn't do that because it's such a stereotype about black women and sexuality.'' She says, ''Film is forever. It's about putting something out there you can be proud of 10 years later. I mean, Meryl Streep won Oscars without all that.''
As a result Halle Berry went on to become the first African-American actress to win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance, was cast instead. ANGELA herself received a GOLD GLOBE award for her part in the movie WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT a biopic of IKE &TINA TUNERS tumultuous relationship. I for one would like to see more of this lady on the screen or TV I would love to see her grace the theatres here in LONDON. Although I may be clutching at straws ,clearly she is actress I believe deserves more meaty roles t I also believe she has already proved herself very worthy of them on so many different levels. Most truly a artist of great talent and has more to spare if hollywood allow her to show that.
