Sanaa Lathan was born in New York City and her school of choice was Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. Sanaa's name actually has great relevance, her first name means "brilliance" in Swahili and "work of art" when translated to Arabic. Sanaa is African-American and her mother was actually an actress and dancer who performed on Broadway as well. Her name was Eleanor McCoy, she starred beside Eartha Kitt. Sanaa's father was a man named Stan Lathan, he was also involved in television. Stan worked behind the scenes for the television channel PBS, he was also a producer for shows like Sanford & Son and Def Comedy Jam, a production by Russell Simmons. Sanaa also has a brother by the name of Tendaji Lathan, who is a DJ. Sanaa originally graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. Upon graduating, she earned a degree in English. Sanaa also achieved a degree at Yale University, where she received a degree in drama.

After finishing up her degree and training at Yale, Sanaa was featured in a number of Shakespeare plays. This is where she earned her claim to fame on the Los Angeles stage. Sanaa had great encouragement from her father, Stan Latham. He was always by her side, encouraging her to make Los Angeles the base of her profession. Sanaa, as a young actress, was able to find television roles that she could star in on shows like In The House, Family Matters, NYPD Blue and Moesha. It was around this time that she received a best actress nominee from the Los Angeles NAACP Theatrical Award Committee. She earned this nominee thanks to her performance in To Take Arms.
Sanaa starred as a mother of Wesley Snipes in the title series Blade. This role earned her a degree of recognition. Later on that year, she starred in Life alongside Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy. She was also featured in The Best Man and The Wood. The Best Man was one of her most promising achievements, she was able to work alongside Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau Jr. and Morris Chestnut. Later on, The Best Man became one of the top 10 highest grossing African American films ever. Sanaa received another award, titled the NAACP Image Award nomination.
